Don't Leave Your Christmas Tree Behind!
As the festive season comes to a close, many find themselves grappling with the question of how to responsibly dispose of their Christmas trees. Fortunately, in San Francisco, there’s no need to resort to illegal dumping. Recology offers a convenient and environmentally friendly way to rid your home of the holiday greens. The city's Christmas tree collection program is fully underway, providing residents a hassle-free option for tree disposal until January 16, 2026.
How the Tree Collection Program Works
From January 2 to January 16, all you need to do is place your undecorated tree alongside your compost bin when it's time for your regular trash and recycling pickup. In line with guidelines set by Recology, it’s essential to ensure your tree is free of lights, ornaments, and tinsel before setting it out for collection. This initiative not only keeps our sidewalks clean but also enables the recycling of trees into compost, promoting sustainability within our community.
The Benefits of Proper Disposal
Public Works director Carla Short highlights the importance of proper tree disposal, stating that “once the trees come down after the holiday season, they should be disposed of properly to prevent sidewalk hazards.” By utilizing this collection program, residents prevent their trees from ending up in a landfill, contributing instead to composting efforts that enrich the soil.
Additional Services and Guidelines
In addition to collecting Christmas trees, Recology will also accept natural wreaths, provided they are stripped of all non-natural decorations. For taller trees—those reaching six feet or more—cutting them in half is required before disposal. This attention to detail ensures efficient processing and maximizes the benefits of the tree cycle program.
If you haven’t yet disposed of your Christmas tree, make sure to take advantage of this valuable free service. It's a simple step you can take to ensure both a clean neighborhood and a commitment to sustainability.
This year, don’t stealthily abandon your tree on the curb—participate in Recology’s tree collection initiative for a cleaner, greener San Francisco. Remember, the window for free pickup closes on January 16, so be sure to act quickly!
